Like many businesses we closed our office doors in March 2020 as soon as we were able to
make arrangements for our 24/7/365 call handling staff to be able to work from home. The
office was only then visited by limited staff member to complete tasks such as fire alarm
tests, back ups and check building security.
As it became clear that we would be returning to a more office based working arrangement in
May / June 2021, we realised that we were not testing our office water supplies for legionella
especially given the lack of use over the preceding year.
As a BNI member, it was very timely to see a presentation by another BNI member, Lizzie
Ward, the owner of SAS Water, on her business. Detailing the legal and health reasons why
legionella testing and risk assessments should be undertaken.
I approached Lizzie to arrange a risk assessment at our office, and a member of her team
attended and completed the risk assessment as well as taking samples of our water for
The advice provided during the site audit along with the detailed risk assessment have
allowed our business to put into place regular testing to ensure the safety and well being of
our staff as they return to more normal working arrangements.
The unseen risk of legionella following a return to an office not used for over 12 months has
been averted, and the regular testing processes we have been left with are simple to carry
out and easy to evidence.
